Only one member of the Carolina Panthers made his way onto the ‘Perfect 53-man Roster’ arranged by ESPN…

The Carolina Panthers have talented players in all phases of the game – offense, defense and special teams. However, only one member of the current roster made their way onto the NFL version of a fantasy draft to begin the season.

While there are plenty of talented players to choose from around the league, money separates just how many superstars can appear on a single roster. Teams are built by putting players in a position to be successful while understanding the financial implications and ability to purchase talent at every position.

Taking the salary cap into consideration, Bill Barnwell of ESPN constructed the ‘Perfect 53-man Roster’ under the limit with players from every team. Considering finances, special teams contributions, scheme and even the age range and contract types to which each player is currently signed, Barnwell has concocted an impressive group.

Many of the veterans in Carolina which typically would be considered – Luke Kuechly, Cam Newton, Greg Olsen – were not selected. Even James Bradberry, who remains on his original rookie contract, didn’t make the team. In fact, it wasn’t an offensive or defensive player picked to represent the Panthers.

Long-snapper J.J. Jansen, who enters his tenth season with the Panthers this year, represented Carolina on the roster. His $915,000 base salary for 2018 and current five-year, $5.5 million contract make him an affordable, yet worthy option on special teams.

Serving on the Panthers special teams since 2009, Jansen has appeared in every game the team has played. Working with various punters, kickers and holders throughout his career, playing a position no one really notices unless something goes wrong.

At  32-years old and with two years remaining on his current deal, it is likely Jansen’s future with the franchise will be left for him to decide. If he elects to play past age 34 then expect the team to work something out in terms of an extension.

Arriving via trade from the Green Bay Packers, Jansen has been performing at a high level in his position for many years.
