Offensive Play Calling

New offensive coordinator Norv Turner debuted his offense last week in Buffalo but without many of the wrinkles he is expected to add. Working with Newton and McCaffrey, the Panthers offense should look a bit different than last season and although not much appeared so in game one, by watching closely you could tell.

There were plenty of short timing routes and plays designed for Newton to get rid of the ball quickly. An area of focus for Turner and the offense, Newton opting for the underneath routes allowing his playmakers to perform in open space is something new.

He missed a few short passes early and didn’t play long but the design and play calling was evident. Even when Newton isn’t on the field keep an eye out for the pass patterns on offense and how the backs are being used, they should provide a glimpse into what to expect from this group in the future.
