Matt Kalil latest Panthers lineman to suffer knee issue
Matt Kalil becomes latest Carolina Panthers OL to suffer a knee issue…
Matt Kalil struggled to protect quarterback Cam Newton early in last Friday’s preseason game against the Miami Dolphins. Surrendering two sacks to Robert Quinn, the Panthers offensive line had may ups and downs over the course of the evening.
Already down two projected starters with injuries to Daryl Williams at right tackle and Amini Silatolu at left guard, the Panthers may now have to replace their left tackle. Missing two consecutive practices after his dismal performance, coach Ron Rivera finally addressed the mounting Kalil situation.
According to the team website, Rivera said the second year Panthers tackle and brother of center Ryan Kalil, had been dealing with knee soreness since training camp. Further evaluation of the seventh year pro is needed and in the meantime, Carolina will again shuffle their front five.
Initially optimistic about Kalil’s absence, calling it a “blip” and describing the resulting opportunity of getting to see what Taylor Moton, who had been starting at right tackle, was capable of on the other side turned downright negative on Monday.

"“Absolutely concerned … You’ve got three potential starters right now that are missing time. It’s going to be tough. But as coaches, we have to continue to do the best job we can to make sure everybody gets prepared.”"
When Moton shifted to left tackle during the game, Carolina turned to another former Minnesota Vikings lineman in Jeremiah Sirles. Joining the Panthers during free agency by signing a one-year contract, Sirles has played both left guard and right tackle in his career.
Even if doctors reveal a positive evaluation of Kalil prior to Friday’s third preseason game, it would be expected that Carolina operate without his services. If so, the Panthers would have Moton (LT), Greg Van Roten (LG), Ryan Kalil (C), Trai Turner (RG) and Sirles (RT) to rely on up front as projected starters.
Depending on the results, both for Kalil and in the game, it could be a glimpse at the initial regular season lineup when Carolina hosts Dallas in just a couple weeks.
