OG – Greg Van Roten vs. Brendan Mahon

On an offensive line riddled with injuries early in the year, two potential starters are now vying for a position on the active roster once everyone is healthy. Both guards Brendan Mahon and Greg Van Roten have been tabbed as potential replacements for Amini Silatolu, recovering from a torn meniscus, but the competition will continue.

Van Roten was impressive early last week and appears up to the task of filling in for the short-term but the rookie, Mahon, has also proven to be adjusting in the NFL quickly and could be counted on sooner rather than later.

The issue arises when Silatolu, the starter prior to his injury, returns. Given the other shortages at both left and right tackle, someone who can play outside may be more beneficial in the long-term. If Rivera and Hurney agree, either Van Roten or Mahon could be removed to make room for a healthy Silatolu again very soon.

Will Mahon display enough for coaches to commit on him being the future at the position or will the journeyman, Van Roten provide the best option in the interim – stay tuned.
