Kenjon Barner

Kenjon Barner is in danger of not making the 53-man roster. I liked when they brought him to the team back in May, but I questioned whether or not he could make an impact. Today, I am left in the same predicament.

He certainly has skill, but being a running back that specializes as a kick returner, that works against him. The Carolina Panthers already have a plethora of solid running backs headlined by CMC and C.J. Anderson.  Elijah Hood has also played well over the past couple of weeks, giving the Panthers some additional depth. Even though depth is always welcome, they really do not need another running back.

To his credit, Barner was effective in the passing game on Friday, catching his only target for 11 yards. Rushing the ball two times for six yards, he was less than effective on the ground. Against the Dolphins, he put together a better body of work, pounding the rock five times for 72 yards. The results certainly came to fruition for him in that game.

Again, the Carolina Panthers have enough depth at both the running back and kick return positions to give a roster spot to someone else. Barner certainly has enough talent to latch on with another NFL team. In Carolina, it’s just a matter of having too many players that are more skilled and can do the same jobs. As a result, he probably will not make the 53-man roster.
