4 takeaways from the Carolina Panthers preseason
The backups are alright
I promise, I am not just quoting the classic hit from the Who. The Carolina Panthers will be in good hands if Cam Newton suffers an injury. Although you do not want to think about a scenario like that, Taylor Heinicke and Garrett Gilbert showed they are more than capable (at least to this point) of taking the reins if need be. That was a major question mark following the departure of an experienced backup like Derek Anderson in the offseason.
Heinicke has completed 17-of-24 passes for 255 yards, a touchdown and an interception so far this preseason. All things considered, his 41.7 completion percentage and 101.9 quarterback rating are notable. Gilbert has done a fine job of his own. He has completed 16-of-29 passes for 162 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. His 101.8 quarterback rating is also very impressive, especially given the amount of time Gilbert has been in the games.
Heinicke will get the start against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday.
Friday against the Patriots, both of them displayed a strong arm and quick decision-making. In addition, their ability to move the football not just on Friday but throughout the course of the preseason was impressive. Although it is only preseason, these are encouraging signs. The Carolina Panthers once had the worst group of backup quarterbacks in the National Football League. At least for now, they have silenced many of the doubters.
