He came at a cheap price

This may seem like a strange  benefit to signing a player but due to his caliber, signing Reid to a cheap contract was the right move. Per a report from USA Today 24 starting NFL safeties made at least $5 million a year in 2016.

Reid signed a one-year contract worth $2 million. $1 million will stand as his base salary while he can earn additional; money through various incentives. $390,000 can be earned on his part through 46-man roster bonuses and he will have additional play-time incentives. If he makes the Pro Bowl, that will lead to more money as well.

The highest-paid safety in the league in 2016 was Eric Berry of the Kansas City Chiefs. He commanded a $13 million price tag. The lowest-paid safety on the list was Andre Hall, who played for the Texans. The bottom line is that safety is an expensive position. With the pedigree that Reid has, the Carolina Panthers were wise to take a flyer on him.
