Eric Reid may be thrown into the fire on Sunday against the Giants

For Carolina Panthers fans hoping to see their first glimpse of new acquisition Eric Reid, they may not have to wait long at all. As a matter of fact, there is a chance we could see him suit up this Sunday when the Panthers take on the Giants.

As Steve Taranto of 247Sports noted, head coach Ron Rivera told the media on Monday that their is the possibility Reid could be called into action. All indications point to the fact that the Panthers acquired him with the intention of him starting right away.

"“Yes, I think so,” said Rivera when asked if Reid could start. “He’s come in, he’s in great shape, he’s a guy who’s really trying to learn and understand and fit in. And I think he will fit very well into what we do as a football team.”"

In addition, Rivera talked a bit about Reid’s work ethic and how he has been willing to learn ever since arriving in Carolina. This can only mean good things to come.

"“He’s been very committed to it,” said Rivera. “He came in, signed on Thursday. He was in the building on Friday with Coach Rodgers. … He came back Sunday with Coach Rodgers that afternoon. He’s a young man that really wants to get into the book and get himself prepared and go forward to play. And that’s our goal is to get him ready to play, and somehow, in some fashion, play him on Sunday.”"

This is all good news to hear, especially coming form the coach’s mouth. Eric Reid can give the Panthers safety position an extra boost. That is what they need as Colin Jones has not been performing well to begin the season. Maybe this will instill better play out of Jones. That would certainly be a welcome development. However, with Reid in town, I doubt Jones will continue to hold the title of starter for much longer. I give the Panthers credit for signing him. They recognized a need and addressed it right away.

Eric Reid recognizes he has a chance and now is trying to make the most of it. I believe he will fit in really well with the rest of the defense. He is the type of player any team would love to have. At heart, he is a playmaker who just loves to play the game of football. That alone should endear him to many Panthers fans. On a defense full of playmakers, he should fit right in.

dark. Next. Greg Olsen may return soon

I truly hope he gets a chance to see the field on Sunday. Especially against the New York Giants who boast many weapons, they will need everybody to be all systems go. The secondary should be busy with the Giant wide receivers, and that should provide Reid with the chance to go out and make an impact. At the very least, he will get a sense of what Carolina Panthers football is all about.
