Carolina Panthers: 30 greatest players in franchise history
I doubt many teams have fullbacks on their list of the greatest players in franchise history. However in the case of the Panthers, it just made sense to include Mike Tolbert among the club’s 30 best players of all-time.
Tolbert may only have stuck around in Carolina for five years, but he was quite the difference maker during that time. As both a blocker and offensive weapon, he brought far more value than anyone could have expected when he came over from the then-San Diego Chargers.
Realistically, the numbers for Tolbert aren’t anything outstanding. During his time with Carolina, he racked up 1,763 total yards and 19 touchdowns while serving as a utility man and short-yardage back.
What really helped him stand out though, was his ability to pick up first downs and pull off the occasional big play that men of his size simply should not.
Tolbert was actually more productive during his time with the Chargers, but was twice named to the Pro Bowl and All-Pro team when he was a Panther. His impact may have been understated, but it was certainly undeniable.
