The Carolina Panthers quarterback stood up for the rookie wideout Wednesday.

As a rookie, it must feel good when after a rough game, your teammates still have your back. That is the situation  wideout D.J. Moore is in. After a rough go of things on Sunday, his teammates , specifically Cam Newton, want him to know that everything is going to be alright.

In the game against the Redskins, Moore fumbled the ball twice which lead to 10 unanswered points on the part of Washington. One can argue that those turnovers were two of the bigger ones during the course of the game. Wednesday, Cam Newton defended his teammate during his media availability.

"“I did kind of tell him that I’m kind of happy that it did happen to him. And the fact that it happened this early,” said Newton. “Because at his age, when you first come into the league, you’re so numb or oblivious to what the league really is. From preparation to winning and losing to whatever.“You’re still so mesmerized off of ‘Oh my God, my last name is on the back of a official NFL jersey’. So for him, whether he’s been numb or he hasn’t really realized it – And I’m not saying he has – But the natural instinct just takes over, because everybody’s living their dream right now. And he’s young enough to still kind of be in that maze inside.”"

I personally never thought of this situation like the way Newton did, but it is very insightful. The sooner rookies realize how hard the grind of the National Football League is, the more it can benefit them. Up until Sunday, Moore had never experienced a turn of events like the scenario that took place Sunday. During a football career that has seen so much success, this type of adversity is probably a bit foreign.

This was certainly a “Welcome to the league, rookie” type of moment. I can only imagine the emotions he was going through. Especially as a rookie, you aim to have everything go the right way every time you step on the field. You want to make a positive impression. However, as he is finding out, ups and downs are all too common in the National Football League.

With that being said, I feel very bad for him. The last thing you want are these mistakes to come at crucial times. You would rather these types of mistakes come during a blowout victory win. That way, they are less-magnified. I truly hope he gets several opportunities on Sunday just so he can put this behind him.  Having teammates that have your back must be a great feeling, especially as a rookie, where in many cases, you are still trying to earn the respect of your peers.

I can’t wait to see what he does on the field Sunday. The entire team needs to have a big game and I think Moore will be in the thick of things. The fact that Cam Newton has his back leads me to believe that his teammates want that for him as well. Now,  Moore just has to move on and put the events of Sunday behind him.
