Special Teams

Entering the season, special teams play was a strong factor for the Panthers. For a roster loaded in talent, this unit was solid in terms of personnel and benefited from punter Michael Palardy and kicker Graham Gano.

However, since proving they were incredibly reliable as Gano nailed a career long 63-yard game winning field goal last time Carolina played inside Bank of America Stadium, he’s been anything but in terms of kicking.

The Panthers have missed an extra point in each of the last two games and penalties forced Rivera to punt twice last game. Gano missed a field goal too which was negated by one penalty but despite the wind, it hasn’t been a great couple of weeks for this unit.

If Carolina hopes to win on Sunday, especially in what is expected to be a defensive battle, they need Gano to be true and Palardy to help flip the field when called upon. A return to putting the “special” back into special teams would lift the Panthers chances of a victory over Baltimore.
