Carolina Panthers were smart with a quiet trade deadline
The Panthers made the right move by standing pat on Tuesday.
The Carolina Panthers did not make any moves during Tuesday’s busy trade deadline, and I am okay with that. Sure, big names found new homes with other teams, but the fact of the matter is that the Panthers don’t need much in order to contend. In addition, by not doing anything at the deadline, they sent a message to their fans and the rest of the league.
That message is simple: the Carolina Panthers are comfortable with the players that they have and feel that this roster can contend for a Super Bowl title. As some of you may recall, they already did their fair share of dealing earlier in the year. On September 1, the Panthers traded an undisclosed draft pick to the Detroit Lions for offensive lineman Corey Robinson. Then on September 25, the team traded a conditional draft pick in 2021 to the Buffalo Bills in exchange for offensive tackle Marshall Newhouse.

Are those moves that make headlines like the ones we saw today? No, as a matter of fact they are the exact opposite. It may have been frustrating to watch all of these big names go to different teams as many continue to build with an eye on the playoffs. Could they have made some moves of a smaller stature? Yes, they probably could have and that would not have hurt them by any means.
However, the moves made this off-season combined with the veterans that were already on the team have put the Panthers in a position where they should feel comfortable making a deep run into the playoffs. They traded away Calvin Benjamin last year, opening the door for Devin Funchess to take over. They brought in D.J. Moore via the draft, adding another weapon to Cam Newton’s toolbox. They drafted tight end Ian Thomas giving the Panthers a future weapon at the position. Let’s also not forget the addition of Norv Turner, who at this juncture is proving to be a tremendous hire. Combine that with the talent already on the roster, this team is strong at most of the positions on the field.
Even the offensive line, which was a question mark heading into the season, has appeared to stabilize. Although the line may not look like a Pro bowl-caliber line, they have gotten the job done. The Panthers rank at the bottom of the league with 10 sacks given up on the year, a statistic Newton must be very thankful for. This is one of those situations where if it isn’t broken, you don’t need to fix it.
The Carolina Panthers have done things by committee the entire season, and it has worked to this point. The fact that they did not make any drastic moves on Tuesday is a great thing. They are ready to ride with the roster that they have, and this is a roster that can win the Super Bowl when they are firing on all cylinders. After losing to the Saints in the Divisional Round last year they look to go on an even deeper playoff run. If they can continue to play at a high level, that is certainly in the cards.
