The special teams units for Carolina have had their share of ups and downs over the first half of the season. After a consistent start and game-winning performance against the New York Giants, the Panthers suffered two poor outings in back-to-back weeks.
A missed extra point, poor decisions on punt team and multiple penalties hurt this unit in two different games but they have seemingly rebounded and returned to their high level of play over recent weeks.
Kicker Graham Gano is enjoying a great season, having been named NFC Special Teams Player of the Month for October and punter Michael Palardy has also been solid helping Carolina to win the battle of field position on more than one occasion.
The return game could use some improvement but contributions by rookie wide receiver D.J. Moore, Damiere Byrd and Curtis Samuel have allowed running back Christian McCaffrey to focus on offense this season.
Filled with highs and lows, the Panthers defense is a work in progress but one that continues allowing Carolina opportunities to win football games.
