Failed Confidence

The move to try for a two-point attempt shows Rivera had no faith in Gano, who had missed a previous extra-point attempt, in addition to missing a 34-yard field goal earlier. The Panthers kicker had struggled throughout the game but his past should have given Rivera confidence to trust his abilities.

Not only did the decision display a distrust in Gano but also in the Panthers defense. The struggling unit had spurts of nice play mixed between extreme lapses and an inability to stop Detroit in overtime must have been on Rivera’s mind.

The decision casts doubt on two of the three phases of a football team and following a failed conversion attempt, puts all three units in a terrible light. Attempt the kick, miss – and the blame falls on special teams, make it and the game continues.
