Failed Philosophy

“You go for two on the road” is a poor excuse given the circumstances at the time of Rivera’s decision. While this may be a suitable philosophy for a college overtime where the actual game outcome hangs in the balance of the conversion, for Carolina at Detroit – it didn’t.

There was over one-minute remaining in the football game and the Panthers had timeouts left, until having to burn one for the conversion. Even if the two-point conversion is successful, the win is far from guaranteed with Detroit having all of their own timeouts and needing just a field goal for the win.

If there was no time left and a conversion guarantees the win then no one should fault Rivera for his aggressive play calling but considering the two-points would have only given Carolina a lead that the defense would potentially give up, it would have been best left for them to decide.
