Should Cam Newton be benched for the remainder of the Carolina Panthers season?

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton has played extremely well throughout the season under new offensive coordinator Norv Turner. Changes were made to limit his down field throws in an effort to keep him better protected with routes designed for quick releases and easy reads.

Newton has flourished under the system, especially thanks to running back Christian McCaffrey and his effectiveness after the catch. When not schemed into the play, McCaffrey is typically a check down option that Newton has been more than willing to connect with throughout the year.

Completing nearly 70-percent (69.5) of his passes, a career high, Newton has thrown for 2,999 yards and 24 touchdowns. His 400 pass attempts have him on pace for another career high but should Newton continue to take the field?

Since mid-year his injury status has been limited during the week with Carolina opting to not test his arm during practice but save it for game situations. Twice he has been removed from the game in lieu of backup Taylor Heinicke when a deep down the field throw was warranted.

It happened again on Sunday at Tampa Bay after Newton missed a wide open Devin Funchess streaking down the middle of the field. Heinicke entered for one last Hail Mary attempt that fell short and with it the Panthers hopes at making the playoffs.

Yes, they remain mathematically eligible but games against the Cleveland Browns, Atlanta Falcons and two with New Orleans say otherwise. The question becomes if Newton is not 100-percent healthy, which is obviously the current case, does it benefit him or the team by continuing to play?

He finished 2016 after being eliminated from playoff contention with a torn rotator cuff – the initial injury which led to his current situation but would he do so again? Newton has answered by saying it is his job to compete and lead this team but is doing so putting him in harms way?

The answer is unless it is deemed medically inappropriate then yes, Newton should play. He is the franchise quarterback and responsible for the offensive performance. If he’s healthy, even at the current state – then he should be on the field.

Next. Olsen done for season, maybe forever. dark

If medical reports determine otherwise, or if tests reveal the potential for a major setback, then he should be sidelined in order to properly heal for next year.
