Secondary Play

The weakest unit on the Panthers defense, Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan has dominated the Carolina secondary the past few games. Going back to last season, Ryan has thrown for 902 yards and five touchdowns in the last three meetings – a year prior to that he and Julio Jones connected for 300 yards and a score, in a single game.

One positive has been the improved play over recent weeks since Rivera took over responsibility for the defensive play calls. Coupled with a bit of pressure from the front four, the Panthers have been playing better on the back end.

Last week, Carolina held prominent passer and NFL MVP candidate Drew Brees to just 203 yards and forced an interception. Similar production should provide the Panthers an opportunity to win, regardless of who is under center on offense.
