A hot start for Newton, who had 15 touchdowns and only four interceptions during his first eight games, crumpled as his surgically repaired shoulder failed to cooperate. Nine giveaways over the next six games didn’t help matters as Newton continued to struggle throwing the football.

His leadership and willingness to put his own health at jeopardy kept him in games until ultimately, it was determined the Panthers opportunity at the playoffs had passed. Winning six of the team’s first eight games, Carolina remained in the mix despite multiple losses after the midway point.

His backups – Taylor Heinicke, Kyle Allen and eventually Garrett Gilbert, were all given opportunities over the final two games. Each performed well but injuries to Heinicke and Allen, sustained in the pocket, further solidified the durability of Newton.
