Youth was the focus for a wide receiver and tight end group that began to emerge as the season transpired. Veteran tight end Greg Olsen was again sidelined with a foot injury, opening the door for rookie Ian Thomas to develop a rapport with Newton and fit into the offense.

On the outside, the rise of first-round pick D.J. Moore coupled with Curtis Samuel filled a void vacated by Devin Funchess and an injured Torrey Smith. The latter showed signs of a promising Panthers season but injuries derailed his season.

Funchess, in a contract year, failed to gain any notoriety after being considered the team’s leading receiver. His days in a Panthers uniform are likely over unless he’s willing to accept a significantly reduced contract than what he may receive on the free agent market.
