Chuck Pagano would be intriguing hire for Panthers defense
The Panthers would be wise to put him on the staff.
Although the National Football League season is still technically going on, many teams have transitioned to offseason mode. One of those teams unfortunately is the Carolina Panthers. With several coaching vacancies to fill, they have been conducting interviews with several names around the league. Thursday was no different as they brought in a familiar face from the coaching ranks for an interview.
Chuck Pagano was the recipient of the interview. Carolina is looking to fill the vacancy left at the defensive backs coach position, and Pagano is certainly a good fit. He served as the defensive backs coach for UNLV in 1990 and then was promoted to defensive coordinator in 1991. He served as the defensive backs coach and linebackers coach for East Carolina from 1992-1994. He was the defensive backs and special teams coach for Miami from 1995-2000, and served as the Cleveland Browns secondary coach from 2001-2004. Also included in his itinerary is his first major opportunity as a head coach in the NFL.

Most recently, he served as the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts from 2012-2017 he compiled a 53-43 record and won two AFC South divisional titles in 2013 and 2014. Back-to-back 8-8 finishes in 2015 and 2016 may have done him in. He has been out of the coaching ranks ever sense.
I think he would be a great hire for the Carolina Panthers. Much like Perry Fewell, he brings recent success in the National Football League to the table. Especially since he coached the Baltimore Ravens defense in 2011 as their defensive coordinator, that is certainly a testament to what he has been able to do on that side of the football. The jury was out on him in regards to how effective he was as a head coach, but there is no denying that he has had success in the league.
This is an intriguing name for the Panthers to look at. For starters, Pagano has a little bit of prestige with his name. He isn’t some second-rate assistant. This is a guy who has had success in the game. He would bring immediate veteran knowledge to a young Carolina secondary. He is known to be able to relate to his players as well, which may prove to be a valuable character trait with the younger players at defensive back.
Carolina should certainly take a close look at Pagano and see what he could bring to the table for them. He is one of the more qualified assistants out there for the defensive backs coach position. What that will look like since Ron Rivera’s taking over the defensive plays is a story for another day. Bringing Pagano on the staff would certainly be a great hire and would steer the Panthers back in the right direction.
