The Panthers got a great coach in Perry Fewell.

As many of you have probably heard by now, Perry Fewell was hired by the Carolina Panthers on Tuesday. Serving the position of secondary coach, he brings tremendous experience to the Panthers. With a secondary that includes veterans such as James Bradberry and younger players like Donte Jackson, Fewell will have a lot to work with.

He is very excited about taking the position, saying as much to the media on Tuesday. He sounds upbeat and ready to take the reins as the Panthers look to solve problems they had in the secondary last year.

"“It’s a dream come true, so to speak,” said Fewell, who was born in Cramerton, N.C. “Coaching for your home team – what better joy could you get? I’m just excited to get to work.”"

The Panthers made a great hire here. This is not a guy that they just hired to fill the position. This is a coach who has tremendous experience. He worked with Ron Rivera in Chicago so there is certainly familiarity there. There is also a track record of results. He won the Super Bowl with the New York Giants in 2011 when New York allowed just 14 points per game on the year.

Not only do I think he is an asset to Rivera, but I also think he can be an asset to Eric Washington. I will admit, I have complained about Washington quite a bit. However, I do think there is some potential for Washington as a full-time defensive coach. He just does not have the experience yet. Washington can learn a lot from Fewell, and I believe he will. Maybe then, Rivera can give up the playcalling duties.

He is one of the more underrated choices throughout the National Football League and for the Panthers to be able to get him to come to Carolina is crucial. He could certainly do his part stabilizing the defense and last year that was half the battle. The defense really had no direction and was not sure what they were doing at times. Now, Fewell can provide a voice to turn to and help keep the defensive unit organized. If he can do that, that will automatically make this hire look even better.

The Panthers picked the right coach for the right situation. Fewell should be able to make an impact right away. This was a great move and after a disappointing 2018 season, they are already off to a tremendous start in 2019.
