The refusal to extend Davis at linebacker leaves an opening in the middle of the Carolina defense, even with the emergence of Shaq Thompson and development of rookies Jermaine Carter and Andre Smith. As Rivera assumes the defensive play calling for the foreseeable future it is expected there will be plenty of formations where three or even four linebackers are on the field at the same time, depending on the use of a nickel cornerback.

A proven presence operating alongside Thompson and Luke Kuechly would be a welcome addition and linebacker Cory Littleton is a free agent to watch. Littleton signed with the Rams as an undrafted free agent three years ago and has turned into a team player who can contribute on defense and special teams.

Littleton started all 16 games for the Rams making 125 tackles with four sacks and three interceptions during the regular season. In two games against the New Orleans Saints, who Littleton would face twice a year with Carolina, he led the Rams in tackles with 21 total.
