Carolina Panthers face limited market if a fill-in quarterback is required.

The Carolina Panthers second half collapse was largely due to quarterback Cam Newton attempting to play injured and not being able to generate his same results from earlier in the season. After a dismantling by the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Panthers dropped their next six – seven in a row – and fell completely out of playoff contention.

While the defense struggled, off target passes and turnovers haunted the offense throughout the slide. Newton, who threw 15 touchdowns and four interceptions through the first eight games, tossed an even nine scores and turnovers through his last six.

Recent news of arthroscopic surgery on his throwing shoulder, a second procedure on the same arm in less than two years, leaves his future in jeopardy. While the operation took place earlier than in 2017, leaving more recovery time, his ability to return at full strength should be the focus for Carolina.

One option would be to let Newton rest for an entire season but the Panthers would need an emergency fill-in quarterback. Backups Taylor Heinicke and Kyle Allen each performed well in their opportunities last season but neither lasted an entire game.

If Newton were to miss a whole season, Carolina would benefit from adding a quarterback with experience but the free agent market is limited this offseason. Following is a look at a few of their available options.
