Panthers quarterback Cam Newton appears to be recovering nicely
Cam Newton may be back on the field sooner rather than later.
Hang tight Carolina Panthers fans. You may see the Cam Newton of old in just a few short months. By all accounts, his recovery is going quicker than expected and that can only mean good news moving forward.
Friday NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero gave us an update on how Newton’s recovery is going. By all accounts, it sounds like it’s going well. Newton still has a long way to go, but obviously that is expected. I can only imagine that he is itching to get back our football field as soon as possible. We saw firsthand last season what type of competitive fire he had. Pelissero notes that Newton may be able to participate in Spring OTAs (with limitations). Even more exciting is the fact that the Panthers believe Newton will be ready for training camp and have a full go-ahead for the 2019 season.
"“Newton’s shoulder, I’m told, is structurally sound,” said Pelissero. ‘The Panthers believe that scope he had was really beneficial to clean out a lot of scar tissue that was left over from his last shoulder surgery two years ago. The Panthers think that Newton will now be able to push the ball down the field like the Cam Newton of old.”"
If Newton is able to get his range of motion back, that will make a huge difference. Last season you could tell he was struggling in some games. I don’t blame him for his struggles, as I’m sure he was worried about protecting his shoulder. Now, he will not have to worry any longer. If Newton can get back to his old form, that will bode well for the Panthers. Can you imagine a fully healthy Cam Newton throwing to Curtis Samuel and DJ Moore? That sounds pretty good to me.

It sounds as though Newton is progressing really well with his recovery. Even more encouraging is the fact that it does not sound like his operation was invasive. Rather, it just sounds like a matter of cleaning out tissue. With the amount of talent in the NFC South, the Panthers need Newton to be able to have a great 2019 season. We know he has the capabilities to be a game-changer. Now, he will have a healthy arm to show that he is one of the best quarterbacks in the National Football League.
The recovery of Cam Newton may be better than any off-season acquisition. Newton is literally the engine that makes the offense run and an important staple of the franchise both on the field and in the community. Having him healthy will make the Panthers a playoff team again. If I was Carolina, the next thing I would make sure is that the offensive line is made stronger either via free agency or the draft. The last thing they want to see is Cam Newton struggle through another season.
