Carolina Panthers create official game management position on staff.

The Carolina Panthers have been busy this offseason making changes to their coaching staff and preparing for the 2019 season. Coach Ron Rivera recently added two former players, Everette Brown and Ben Jacobs, to assist with linebackers and special teams, respectively. In addition, a long awaiting position has finally been assigned.

Defensive line coach Sam Mills III is adding a new title and responsibility this year. Mills will serve as a game management coach to help Rivera with certain aspects related to the clock and other areas. New owner David Tepper has been a proponent of implementing analytics into the sideline and it appears next season now offers the first such test.

According to the official team website, Mills will help with, “clock management, replay challenges and other situational football analysis.” Rivera shared the following comments about the move and what the long-time assistant has to offer.

"“Sam sees the game from a different perspective. He’s very interested in how the league operates, how the game operates. By that I mean he’s a guy that pays attention to the rules, he pays attention to replay and he understands time management and score management.”"

While the amount of unnecessary timeouts seemed to decrease last season, there were still a few situations that left fans scratching their heads in regards to what was happening – especially just prior to halftime.

Hopefully, the additional input Mills provides about time out usage and when replays can be most beneficial will keep Carolina from creating similar situations in the future. Tepper discussed his unwillingness to give anything away – especially time – during an interview with Bill Voth, following his first full season as an owner.

Only time will tell (literally) if the move has a positive impact on the team’s clock management next season.
