Carolina Panthers make intriguing move hiring Jake Peetz
The Carolina Panthers have a new running backs coach.
The coaching changes for the Carolina Panthers have continued this offseason, and Wednesday was no different. Running backs coach Jim Skipper announced his retirement after 32 years of coaching in the National Football League. Luckily, the Panthers were ready for this move and found someone to take his place.
According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated Carolina is bringing in Alabama offensive analyst Jake Peetz to fill the vacant position. Peetz does have professional experience. He was on the staffs’ of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Washington Redskins, and Oakland Raiders. As Breer notes, Peetz was a huge part of Alabama head coach Nick Saban’s decision to put run-pass options into Alabama’s offense. As he also notes, Ron Rivera wants to introduce new ideas into the offense.

I think this is an intriguing move at the very least. Especially bringing in a coach who most recently worked in the college ranks, this is an interesting decision. It helps Peetz that he is coming from one of the most successful college programs in the country. Having previous experience in the National Football League does not hurt either. Speaking from an offensive point of view, if the Panthers decide to implement run- pass options, that could benefit Cam Newton greatly. Yes, that might make him more susceptible to hits. However, Newton loves to run with the ball and offensive coordinator Norv Turner tried to make him more of a pocket passer last year.
To me, this also means that we may see more roles for Christian McCaffrey. He already was a huge part of both the running and passing games last year. Now, I’m wondering if the coaching staff will make McCaffrey more one-dimensional again just to ease the workload off him. I’m not saying he won’t participate in the passing game at all, I’m just wondering if he will focus on being a runner a bit more. Maybe Peetz will focus on working with guys like Cameron Artis Payne and Fozzy Whitaker . It will be interesting to see what Peetz does in this role.
The fact that he has been so successful with the run-pass option it to me means RPOs will be involved in the offense even more. In addition, whether it be as a decoy for Newton as he runs an option play or if he will be on the receiving end of a run-pass option, the possibilities for McCaffrey are endless. There is certainly tremendous potential with the hiring of Peetz and it will be interesting to see what he can bring to the table.
