Damian Parms an important depth signing for Carolina Panthers
The Carolina Panthers made a quiet but important move on Thursday.
The Carolina Panthers made a roster move on Thursday, signing safety Damian Parms to a one-year contract. This is certainly an exciting day for Parms especially in comparison to last season.
He spent last season on injured reserve as a shoulder injury occurring during the preseason ended his season. He has yet to play in a regular season game to this point, so to say he is an underdog would be a true understatement. Nevertheless, with the Panthers needing additional help at the safety position, this could be the opportunity he has been waiting for.
It is not as though he is completely new to the National Football League. He has seen proverbial cups of coffee with a couple teams playing with the Bills and Falcons. In 2017, he spent time on the Carolina Panthers practice squad. At the very least, he has familiarity with the organization, which is important when resigning a player. Having been an undrafted player out of UAB, the odds were truly stacked against him.
Per a press release from the Panthers official website, Parms is extremely thankful to be back with the Carolina Panthers organization. After all he has been through to get to this point, I can’t say I blame him one bit.
"“This is a blessing,” Parms said. “If I can stay healthy, I feel like I’m in a good position to play. Before the injury I felt so great about the year, felt like I was going to do some great things.”"
The Panthers could definitely use his skills at the free safety position. We are not sure if Mike Adams is coming back yet and that leaves Rashaan Gaulden as the only returner from last year at the position. It will be interesting to see what he can do this year, but he can’t do it alone. A healthy Parms would definitely be an asset to Carolina. They could certainly use the veteran experience at the position.
Although it is not a signing that will make headlines, the Carolina Panthers definitely did the right thing by giving Parms a new contract. We do not know what the safety position will look like in certain spots, and at the very least Carolina has someone that they can count on to fill the void. I’m excited to see what he can do this season and he should be an asset to the team moving forward.
