Carolina Panthers moving on from Devin Funchess
Former Carolina Panthers receiver Devin Funchess announces he’s looking for a new team.
The Carolina Panthers offseason continues as much of the front office personnel is evaluating potential draft picks at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis this weekend. With roster needs along both lines prevalent, another position could also draw some attention either during free agency or the draft.
Since parting ways with superstar receiver Steve Smith, the Panthers have been in constant search of a replacement. Four draft picks, all in the first two rounds, have been utilized in an attempt to arm quarterback Cam Newton with a legitimate No. 1 option to no avail – yet.
While the jury remains out on last year’s first-round selection, D.J. Moore, and Curtis Samuel, who was picked in the second round two seasons ago, the need for a proven target is growing. After missing on Kelvin Benjamin, Carolina attempted to make Devin Funchess a prime threat to no avail.

Funchess recently took to social media making his proclamation that he was a, “former Carolina Panther and now free agent, looking for a new team” while announcing a partnership with the personalized video shout-out group, Cameo.
Carolina moving on from Funchess doesn’t come as much of a surprise after the team sat him for the final regular season game last year in an effort to evaluate some of their younger receivers. However, the news being delivered from Funchess himself is a bit surprising.
Faced with another vacancy, there are a few different routes general manager Marty Hurney could take in order to fill the void. A few receivers who could make an impact should be available on the free agent market in a couple weeks, the NFL Draft is upcoming in the spring or new owner David Tepper could make a splash by trading for Pittsburgh Steelers star, Antonio Brown.
Once an afterthought, the Panthers should at least be interested in determining what the potential asking price is for Brown, especially if tight end Greg Olsen decides not to return. Young potential currently exists on the roster, but landing a proven threat for Newton could take the offense to another level.
Stay tuned as Hurney continues to navigate Carolina through the offseason in preparation for next year.
