The Carolina Panthers currently have just three running backs on the roster.

Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey proved capable of handling an advanced workload in his second NFL season but coach Ron Rivera hopes to reduce his dependency somewhat next year. Off to a promising career, the Panthers need to maximize McCaffrey’s production and ensure he remains a part of the backfield for years to come.

Despite their intentions, there has been little action around the running back position this offseason other than letting Cameron Artis-Payne and Fozzy Whittaker become free agents. The moves leave only Reggie Bonnafon, who signed as an undrafted free agent last season, and Elijah Hood, a Charlotte native who was injured and missed the 2018 season, on the roster behind McCaffrey.

Hoping to create another rendition of “double trouble” out of the backfield – reminiscent of Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams – general manager Marty Hurney must have his eye on a few potential collegiate prospects.

The Panthers currently own the sixteenth overall pick in the NFL Draft and while most people suspect they are targeting a defensive end, the need for a running back is real. Unfortunately, Carolina has plenty of viable positions for their first pick – safety, defensive end, offensive tackle, linebacker, running back – any could be justified and the pass rushing talent pool available within this rookie class may lead Hurney to target another option.

While McCaffrey has proven to be an asset, it seems his durability is now causing an opposite effect. Originally questioned about his ability to withstand an NFL season and endure a full slate of responsibility, his play has caused some to forget a quality backup is a necessity.

If no moves are made during the free agent signing period to return a familiar face in Whittaker or Artis-Payne, then expect Hurney to use a high draft pick on a running back. While it may not be their first one, if the team wants someone comparable to McCaffrey, it better be sooner rather than later.
