Christian Miller smart pick for rebuilding Carolina Panthers defense
The Carolina Panthers were wise to draft Miller.
The Carolina Panthers have made it a point this draft to focus on getting younger defensively. Saturday, they did that while finding tremendous value in the later rounds. With the 115th pick in the fourth round, the team selected edge defender Christian Miller from Alabama.
Miller is a player that is definitely more of a tackler than one who can get after the quarterback. For Carolina, that is okay. They already took care of a player that puts pressure on the quarterback in Brian Burns. Miller really saw his stock rise during his time in Tuscaloosa. After recording 16 tackles in 2016 and six in 2017, he exploded onto the scene last year.

In 14 games, Miller tallied 34 tackles including 11 for a loss. His eight sacks certainly added an edge to the Alabama defense. Anytime you can contribute to a team as loaded as the Crimson Tide, you are doing something right. According to his NFL.com profile, one of his traits is that he is long and athletic. We are seeing more and more athletic linebackers enter the National Football League. Miller should fit right in that category. Athleticism was something that the Carolina Panthers did not have a lot of last year, and Miller is certainly going to add that dimension to the team.
This was another great pick by the Carolina Panthers. They need players who are versatile defensively and are not one-dimensional. Miller can do a little bit of everything. I like the fact that the Carolina Panthers are stocking up on young defensive players. That is the direction the National Football League is going right now. Youth and players who can play multiple positions are valued highly in the league.
Miller is one of 10 Alabama players selected in the 2019 NFL draft, as Nick Saban continues to prove that he is one of the best coaches in college football. He certainly has a knack for developing talent in Tuscaloosa. When you draft an Alabama player you know that more often than not, you are getting a solid player. Not only is Carolina getting a solid player here, they are getting a versatile player that should be able to help their defense moving forward. Their defense really struggled in some spots last year and it looks like the organization is making a concerted effort to patch up the holes.
In what has been a tremendous final day of the draft for Carolina, Miller certainly adds to that. It will be interesting to see what Carolina does with their final pick.
