Carolina Panthers fill 90-man roster as offseason continues
Carolina Panthers sign two tight ends, fill 90-man offseason roster.
The Carolina Panthers offseason continues as general manager Marty Hurney works to round out the roster ahead of a third phase of training. Ten days of more organized activities and practices, in addition to the first full team minicamp of the year are set to begin in just under three weeks.
As the rookies, undrafted free agents and tryout players prepare for their introduction to the NFL, Hurney completed the current offseason roster by adding a few more players. After targeting many of the areas of need during free agency, the draft and following – there weren’t too many vacancies left to fill.
Carolina chose to target the depth at tight end by signing two former Alliance of American Football (AAF) participants – Cole Hunt and Marcus Baugh. Playing for San Antonio and San Diego, respectively, each now continues their football careers with the Panthers.

Joining captain and veteran Greg Olsen, Chris Manhertz, second year player Ian Thomas and others, these two face an uphill climb in order to secure a position among the final 53, once the season arrives.
However, they should have plenty of opportunities between now and then to impress coaches and potentially earn a position as a practice squad participant. Hurney attempted to address the potential future retirement of Olsen by selecting Thomas last year and when forced into action, the results were mostly positive.
The versatility of running back Christian McCaffrey being able to execute from the slot and additions of numerous receivers who feature speed and solid route running over size has seemingly eliminated the need for two tight end formations – further limiting the number of openings at the position.
For now, the roster is set and although there will be multiple changes between now and Week 1, there are 90 who have an opportunity.
