Kyle Allen will have some work to do for the Carolina Panthers.

At one time, quarterback Kyle Allen looked like he was in a prime position to compete for the backup quarterback job for the Carolina Panthers. Now, the picture is not so clear. With the Panthers drafting Will Grier in the 2019 NFL Draft, Allen now has some competition at the backup spot.

There is no doubt that Allen still has a lot of things to work on. Nevertheless, his performance against the New Orleans Saints in the season finale was encouraging. However, as many athletes are quick to tell you, what happened last season is in the past. Now,  the 2019 season is in the rearview mirror. Much like several other players at crowded positions, Allen is going to have to work hard to show he can keep his name in the backup quarterback conversation.

He is in a tricky spot right now. For one, his body of work against the Saints was impressive. There are certainly some things he can build off from that game. However, his body of work is probably not enough to convince the Carolina Panthers that he is the guy for the backup role. As a result, they have now added Grier to the mix. Allen may not be able to continue to build off what he started. Such is the life of a player in the National Football League: unguaranteed  job spots and tough competition all-around.

So far, he seems to be taking it all in stride. That is a good thing, and that type of mentality will serve him well for when the real fun begins in late July and early August. This preseason is crucial for him. Last preseason was crucial for him as well and both iterations have one common theme: staying on the roster. Last year, he was a relative unknown in National Football League circles. He had to fight to stay on the roster and he succeeded. This year, he is going to have to fight to stay on the roster again, and avoid being leapfrogged by a rookie quarterback. That is not taking anything away from Grier, he  is also very talented.

The one thing that Allen possesses that works in his favor is a love for competition. As he told the media on Saturday, competition is what makes the entire team better.

"“Competition brings out the best in everybody. My whole career, I’ve had competition,” said Allen. “I think it’s gonna be great, and we’re gonna make each other a lot better. … I think it’s gonna be a really good battle.“The good thing about it is we’re all three good dudes. There’s not gonna be any animosity in the quarterback room or anything like that. I think there’s a lot of talent in that room, including all three of us and Cam, and I think we’re all gonna make each other better.”"

It is great to hear that all of the quarterbacks are getting along. It fosters a sense of team early on. Time will tell if they will continue to be generous to each other once the competition starts to heat up.
