The Carolina Panthers may have found a diamond in the rough.

Things seem to be going well at the Carolina Panthers rookie minicamp, and that is a good sign for the team moving forward. One of the players who has really stood out to reporters and the team themselves was a seventh-round draft pick. Terry Godwin is turning heads.

Now for those of you who follow college football, this is not necessarily a stunning development. Godwin was a tremendous receiver for the Georgia Bulldogs. As a junior in 2017, he caught 38 passes for 639 yards and six touchdowns. Averaging 16.8 yards per catch, he showed off his explosive playmaking ability that year.

Although his numbers were not as impressive in 2018, he still showed that he could be one of the more explosive receivers in the country. He caught 23 passes for 385 yards and three touchdowns. Averaging 16.7 yards per catch, his best game came against Vanderbilt on October 6. In that contest, he caught two passes for 95 yards and a touchdown, averaging 47.5 yards per reception. Although he was not a go-to weapon for Georgia over the course of his collegiate career, he still was a tremendous security blanket and I have a feeling he will fill that same role for the Carolina Panthers as well.

So far, everything is going according to plan. Per Max Henson of Panthers.com, Godwin looks like anything but a rookie. For a player looking to make a great first impression, Godwin is doing exactly that. That can only mean great things moving forward.

"Seventh-round wideout Terry Godwin said his strengths are his hands and his route-running, and both were on display. He’s very smooth. He didn’t look like a guy participating in his first NFL practice. Offensive coordinator Norv Turner gave him some kudos midway through the practice."

Usually, these undrafted free agent signings do not amount to much. However, the Panthers may have found something here in Godwin. Obviously, training camp will be a better test for the rookie. However if the offensive coordinator gives you kudos when you’re halfway done with your first set of practices, that is a great sign. I truly think he can be an asset to this team. He is probably not going to be the top option for Cam Newton to throw to, but he will be someone that can serve as an additional weapon.

Next. Kyle Allen ready to compete. dark

Last year, that is not something the Carolina Panthers had. Additional weapons were scarce and he only really had D.J. Moore and Devin Funchess to throw to consistently. Secondary weapons were not a thing. The Carolina Panthers did a nice job of addressing that issue this offseason, and if he continues to play well, Godwin could be one of them.
