The Carolina Panthers running back is a gym rat, and that is great.

Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey has been working out. That much is clear. On Sunday, we were given a little bit of an inside look into his workout routine. Let me just tell you, it is not for the faint of heart.

As noted in a report by David Newton of ESPN, he begins his day with performance therapy on his body. This helps him check for any imbalances and also prepares his muscles for the exercises he will be doing. Among other things, he goes to the weight room for strength and power development work, and follows that with a recovery period. That includes a trip to the chiropractor, a massage, and sometimes pool and sauna sessions.

It’s interesting to see how planned out all of this is. This goes on Monday through Friday and features an intensive training day, a football specific movement day, and one day that involves active recovery. That sounds like a lot of work, and I am tired just reading it. McCaffrey seems like an Energizer Bunny however. Nothing seems to faze him. He knows he has to work hard in order to be the best he can be. Especially with running back  being a crowded position in the National Football League, he has to do whatever it takes in order to get better.

Asking him to get better might sound a bit cocky. He truly did it all last season for the Carolina Panthers in both the running and passing games. However, I admire his drive and his work ethic. Although he probably won’t be relied on as much as he was last season, he still should figure to be a big part of the Carolina Panthers offense. I was impressed at the pictures I saw of him earlier this month as his arms looked absolutely shredded and he looked like he could run over even the toughest linebacker.

It’s also refreshing to see a player willing to put in this much work in order to succeed. Especially with him being a high draft pick several years ago, it’s at least an affirmation of a return on the investment. Selecting a running back eighth overall could be dicey, as running backs in the National Football League today are becoming more and more relied upon in an offense. Picking the wrong running back or not picking one at all could really be detrimental to an offense. The Carolina Panthers definitely picked the right one.

With all of this work going on relatively early in the offseason, I’m excited to see what Christian McCaffrey will look like come July. There is no doubt he has put in a ton of work already, and that the work he has put in is merely a stepping stone to bigger things. I’m excited to see the finished product as the team begins the goal of having a successful 2019 season.
