The Carolina Panthers got some good news on Thursday.

Carolina Panthers fans, we have an update in regards to the status of quarterback Cam Newton. Before I make you all nervous, let me assure you that this update is a good one. According to a report from Jordan Rodrigue of the Charlotte Observer, Newton has begun throwing a regulation-sized football. This is certainly a step in the right direction.

As Rodrigue notes, he has not thrown the ball overhand during workouts available to the media this spring. When he had his first surgery in 2017, he was not allowed to throw the ball overhand until the end of the Carolina Panthers training camp. Admittedly, his first surgery was different. This was just a procedure to clean out his shoulder.

I am very encouraged by this. First, it means that he is comfortable enough to throw the football. I had some questions in regards to that because I was worried he would be too tentative when he first began throwing. Although he may experience some tentativeness in general, he at the very least, is willing to throw a football again. Secondly, this means that he could be at full strength come training camp. That would be ideal for the Carolina Panthers as they have a bunch of new receivers this year. Should Newton feel comfortable enough to get back to full form, that will give him enough time to get acclimated with his new wideouts.

Although I am very excited by the fact he is throwing, I want to see him take a hit or two on that shoulder, just to make sure he holds up. Although that may sound a little bit mean and although it will probably be scary for Carolina Panthers fans, it is a necessary task that needs to happen. If he can withstand hits to his shoulder, then he will be in very good shape. I would think Newton is going to get a fair amount of playing time this preseason, more so than usual, just to make sure he is ready for the opener.

This is certainly tremendous news and it certainly should be an exciting development for Carolina Panthers fans. Nevertheless, the backup quarterbacks should be ready in case there is a hiccup for Newton during his rehabilitation process. You never know how these things go, and I certainly hope everything goes according to plan. I do wonder whether shoulder problems are going to be something that nag him for the rest of his career. For a quarterback,  having nagging shoulder injuries is less than ideal.

Next. Addison should thrive in defense. dark

Cleaning out his shoulder and having minor surgeries in the offseason might be something Cam Newton has to do throughout the course of his career. Although that thought is slightly concerning, as long as he feels comfortable and ready to  go  each season from here on out, then he has to do what he has to do. It’s not ideal, but oftentimes neither is the National Football League and the cutthroat nature of it. All that matters is right now, and right now Cam Newton is ready to be the leader once again for the Carolina Panthers.
