Cam Newton

Quarterback Cam Newton has undergone two different shoulder surgeries in a relatively short time frame. How he recovers and performs this season will be the biggest test of his career to this point.

Despite his abilities running the football, if Newton can’t move the football down the field through the air then his career – and the immediate future of the Panthers – are both in jeopardy. General manager Marty Hurney took steps to secure a backup plan by drafting quarterback Will Grier but having not yet taken a live NFL snap, no one knows how he will progress.

All signs point toward Newton recovering fully and being ready when training camp commences next month, but until he’s out on the field consistently and placed back into game situations, the future is hazy at best.

In addition, Newton’s contract expires after next season and the Panthers need to decide if the long-term plan is to stay with their former No. 1 overall selection. His play this year could go a long way in their decision making process.
