Carolina Panthers backup Will Grier impresses with his rank among rookie quarterbacks in first Madden ratings.

Most NFL rosters are set for training camp to begin late this month and that means the latest edition of Madden is soon to be released. Rating new rookies and players from across the league, there were a few surprises, including one for Carolina Panthers backup quarterback Will Grier.

Grier joined Carolina as the third-round pick for the franchise (No. 100 overall). A North Carolina native, growing up just outside of Charlotte, Grier spent time with the Florida Gators and West Virginia Mountaineers during college. Suspended for one-year due to testing positive for a  performance enhancing substance, Grier transferred but continued to excel with the Mountaineers.

Ultimately, he impressed enough to earn the eye of Panthers general manager Marty Hurney and now finds himself as the heir apparent to Cam Newton. Himself, facing an uncertain future due to recent injuries, Carolina made a play to enable some depth at the position, in addition to potentially grooming a quarterback for the future.

The Panthers were high on Grier and getting him with their third-round pick felt like a steal. Apparently, the programmers and those responsible for fitting ratings on every player across the NFL, felt the same way.

Grier is currently rated as the fourth best rookie quarterback despite being the fifth picked during the draft. In a bit of a surprise, Grier registered a 66 overall rating, two positions and three points higher than the legitimate sixth selection – Daniel Jones, made by the New York Giants.

Between Grier and Jones, undrafted free agent Tyree Jackson, who signed with the Buffalo Bills, is the fifth ranked quarterback earning a 64 overall rating. While these numbers are simply based on a group’s projections for these players, it is comforting to see Grier rank among the best in his class.
