Carolina Panthers set to face most worrisome opponent of the 2019 schedule more than once.

After last season, Carolina Panthers fans may be looking forward to this upcoming season more so than any in recent memory. Following the near perfect 2015 run to the Super Bowl, Carolina has only returned to the playoffs once. A dismal 6-10 record followed with losses in five of the first six games and although the Panthers earned their lone berth since in 2017, three consecutive losses to divisional rival New Orleans – including one to end their season – left a bad taste despite double-digit wins.

After significant offseason changes, including a franchise sale and new team owner, Carolina appeared poised to right multiple wrongs. For the first time in team history, putting together back-to-back winning seasons appeared likely. The team had the players, talent and coaching staff to remain competitive, proving capable by winning six of their first eight games. Unfortunately, quarterback Cam Newton was injured midway through and although he attempted to continue, the Panthers dropped six straight before he was shut down.

Splitting the final two games, ending with a win over New Orleans albeit in a game largely played by backups and reserves. This second half collapse led many to count out Carolina entering 2019, but after an impressive offseason and NFL Draft – they are emerging as unexpected contenders.

However, in order to get back on track and compete for another NFC South championship they need to overcome their most worrisome opponent – injuries. Yes, regardless of who lines up opposite the Panthers on game day, if unable to stay away from serious or nagging injuries to their main contributors, then another disappointing season is likely.

Unfortunately, until Newton begins to take part in throwing and team drills on a daily basis during training camp – no one really knows how he is going to respond. A return to full health would be ideal and what fans have to be hoping for but it’s still too early to tell. Even a return to MVP form could put a playoff berth in jeopardy with long-term injuries to other key components – Greg Olsen, Christian McCaffrey, Eric Reid or Luke Kuechly, in particular.

There’s no avoiding it and every team is going to deal with some type of injury scenario during the year but Carolina appears especially vulnerable this season if dealt a serious blow. Fortunately, if healthy, fans may be witness to another exciting season.
