Gerald McCoy admits it’s ‘Super Bowl or bust’ for the Carolina Panthers this season.

Carolina Panthers general manager Marty Hurney went to work this offseason in an effort to revamp the defensive front. Coach Ron Rivera announced a scheme shift to a 3-4 in 2019 as he assumes defensive play calling responsibilities and Hurney immediately answered with hybrid type defenders who could bring pressure off the edge.

With a solid lineup already, having signed veteran Bruce Irvin and drafting Florida State standout Brian Burns, the Panthers secured another key piece to their defense just prior to minicamp in June. Six-time Pro Bowler Gerald McCoy joined Carolina on a one-year deal, joining Kawann Short and Dontari Poe up front to bolster the Panthers defensive unit.

Recently, McCoy joined The Rich Eisen Show to discuss the upcoming season, his departure from Tampa Bay and during the conversation revealed it’s “Super Bowl or bust” for the Panthers this season.

As the preseason continues there are obviously dreams of reaching the big game for every NFL team and McCoy is right in saying that should be everyone’s mindset but in reality there are typically only a handful of teams who possess the talent to bring home the Lombardi Trophy.

Fortunately, Hurney and Rivera appear to have put together a roster which possesses all of the pieces to do just that. On paper, Carolina should be dynamic on offense with a healthy Cam Newton, running back Christian McCaffrey, youthful receiving corps and reworked offensive line.

Defensively, the Panthers appear to have addressed the issues from last season and are poised to make some noise behind McCoy, linebacker Luke Kuechly and others. However, games are not played on paper and a lot can happen over the course of the regular season, including injuries.

Currently, many analysts aren’t too high on Carolina but if they stay healthy, there’s plenty of reason to get on board with McCoy and the Panthers “Super Bowl or bust” mentality.
