The Carolina Panthers quarterback may have avoided major injury last night.

In the wake of Cam Newton’s injury on Friday, many fans were anxious to learn his fate. It appears that we finally have some news in regard to the quarterback. According to multiple media reports, the Carolina Panthers star has mild sprain on his left foot. There is hope that he will be ready for the opener against the Los Angeles Rams.

The injury occurred in the first quarter of Thursday night’s 10-3 preseason loss to New England. After being examined on the sidelines, he walked to the locker room and did not return for the rest of the game. I had wondered if this was moreso because it was a preseason game, and he had not suffered any injury at all. It turns out that an injury is exactly what occurred.

This is not the first time that Newton has had trouble with his ankle. He underwent surgery on it in March 2014. If anything, this seems to be more of a reoccurring problem for him rather than something that will put him on the shelf for any length of time. Obviously, I hate seeing Newton hurt. He is a vital part of the offense. However, it appears that the prognosis could have been a lot worse.

This will certainly be something to monitor now throughout the course of the season. He is already dealing with the process of shoulder rehabilitation. Now, he is dealing with an ankle injury as well. There is no doubt that he is coming into the 2019 season banged up. That is certainly not ideal, as the Carolina Panthers need everybody to be healthy in order to have a successful 2019 season.

What does this mean for the Carolina Panthers backup quarterbacks? I would certainly be ready every single game. You never know what type of hits Newton will take or when another injury can occur. Obviously, this is not something that you want to see. However, with Newton’s health being a huge topic of discussion so far in the offseason, I would definitely study a bit more and be warmed up and ready to go. Kyle Allen and Will Grier should practice and study like they are playing as a starter each and every game.

For now, it appears that Newton will probably be good to go. That is certainly an awesome prognosis, especially since many were fearing the worst possible outcome last night. Hopefully, this is just a minor setback. 2019 has a chance to be very successful for both Newton and the Carolina Panthers. Everyone just needs to remain healthy.
