Carolina Panthers: Keys to finale against the Pittsburgh Steelers
Containing the running game of Pittsburgh
The Carolina Panthers need to stop the rushing attack of the Steelers if they want to win on Thursday. We all know that this unit for Pittsburgh is led by James Conner, but chances are, we probably will not see him on Thursday. That leaves work for the backups, and we will probably see a lot of them on Thursday.
In Sunday’s win over the Tennessee Titans the backups received a lot of carries. Statistically, they did not pick up big numbers .The volume of carries they had leads me to believe that they will receive more on Thursday.
Fourth string running back Trey Edmonds carried the ball six times for 12 yards. Averaging only 2 yards a carry, that isn’t exactly a number that will turn heads. Quarterback Josh Dobbs also showed his running prowess, carrying the ball five times for 10 yards. Jaylin Samuels perhaps had the best night out of any Pittsburgh running back. He carried the ball four times for 16 yards. The second-string back certainly made his case to stay at the position.
Limiting the rushing attack is going to be crucial for the Carolina Panthers. Stacking the box and bringing pressure up the middle is one way to be effective in doing so. There isn’t really anyone that the Panthers should worry about. Rather, they should simply play for the run and be ready for it when it comes. Three Patriots running backs were in double figures for rushing last week, and if Carolina isn’t careful, the Steelers will be able to do the same.
