Will Grier, QB

Rookie quarterback Will Grier has been battling with Kyle Allen and Taylor Heinicke throughout the preseason in an effort to earn a backup role behind Cam Newton. While there’s no question Grier will land either on the Panthers initial 53-man roster or practice squad – his fate could be determined by Thursday night’s game.

Ultimately, coach Ron Rivera has to decide if risking Grier on the practice squad is worth the addition of a another player on the roster or will he keep three quarterbacks. Expectations are Heinicke will be released and then either Allen, Grier or both land on the roster. If not both then one will likely be relegated to practice squad duty, opening them up to being potentially picked up by another NFL team with a need now or later in the season.

In three games, Grier is 23 of 43 for 196 yards adding a touchdown and two interceptions. The potential is there but if it’s enough to warrant a spot on the initial 53 remains to be seen.
