Carolina Panthers roster bubble players to watch vs. Pittsburgh Steelers
Joey Slye, K
Kicker Joey Slye was signed in an effort to provide Graham Gano some rest leading up to the regular season and he’s taken advantage of the opportunity. Initially, it looked like Slye was vying for a chance with another NFL team, proving he could kick at the professional level and putting together some quality game tape for those teams in need.

However, Gano still hasn’t taken part in live action and although Rivera insists there’s no kicking competition, the continued success of Slye has to have at least led to some conversations. A few years ago Carolina drafted Harrison Butker only to place him on the practice squad where Kansas City picked him up. A similar result could take place if Slye makes the cut but without seeing Gano kick, both of their futures are up in the air.
Should Gano take part in this final preseason game and not look very consistent then everyone would be questioning whether or not Slye is the right man for the job. He’s made all eight kick attempts, six field goals and two extra-points, including attempts from 55 and 54-yards. Even if Slye doesn’t end up in Carolina, he’s put together a solid enough resume to warrant an opportunity somewhere.
The Panthers and Steelers kickoff Thursday (8/29) at 7:00 PM ET.
