Carolina Panthers: Roster cuts include veteran Torrey Smith
The Carolina Panthers made their next batch of cuts on Sunday.
It was an interesting day for the Carolina Panthers on Sunday as they completed several transactions. The team cut wide receiver Torrey Smith, cornerback Kevin Seymour, and running back Elijah Holyfield.
Smith is perhaps the most notable name from these cuts. He was hampered by injuries during his two-year tenure with the Carolina Panthers. He only recorded 17 receptions for 190 yards in 2018.

The wide receivers room for the Carolina Panthers is extremely deep. It makes sense that they would get rid of Smith for faster, younger wideouts. However, Smith could definitely be a valuable veteran presence for a team. If he stays healthy, I truly believe that he has something left in the tank. I don’t think it’s much, but I do think he can contribute still.
Seymour was bothered by injuries throughout the course of the preseason, and the Carolina Panthers certainly have enough depth at cornerback to warrant releasing him. Holyfield played well in the preseason with Carolina, and it would be nice if he could end up back with the team should he clear waivers. He certainly had a great game on Thursday night, and certainly showed what he could do when given the opportunity.
In the meantime, the Panthers signed defensive back Natrell Jamerson and wide receivers Brandon Zylstra and Ray-Ray McCloud. McCloud in particular may sound familiar to many. He played for Clemson, and was a member of the Buffalo Bills last year. Maybe some hometown cooking and a new start will reinvigorate him.
In any event, cuts are part of football. It’s not the fun part of course, nor is it the easy part. Even still, the Panthers have to roll into the 2019 season with the roster they have. All things considered, that roster looks pretty good. Hopefully, some of the names that were released this weekend will come back on waivers. For the most part, Carolina has a roster that I feel comfortable putting out on Sundays.
This is a season that is very important for the Carolina Panthers. Hopefully, they can start off on the right foot. It all begins next Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams, and that is not going to be an easy test for anyone involved. Nevertheless, if the Panthers can beat the Rams, that will certainly serve as a nice springboard for the rest of the season. The Panthers could definitely use the early momentum and get things started in the right direction.
