Wide Receiver Play

Over the weekend, Carolina continued to execute their offseason plan to get younger up and down the roster. Parting ways with veteran receiver Torrey Smith, the Panthers indicated a commitment to the young talent added in recent years.

Former first-round pick D.J. Moore is expected to see an increased role, in addition to Curtis Samuel. The two have plenty of potential but neither has been resonsible for taking on the lead role as an outside threat until this season.

Carolina totaled 378 receptions last year with running back Christian McCaffrey accounting for 107 by himself. Removing him and all other backs, the Panthers completed 264 passes to receivers and tight ends led by Moore with 55 catches.

There’s no question about potential, but this receiving corps is largely unproven.
