Carolina Panthers backup quarterback Kyle Allen will get his fourth career start next week.

The Carolina Panthers turned to backup Kyle Allen after franchise quarterback Cam Newton aggravated a foot injury suffered during the preseason. After an 0-2 start to the season, the Panthers have rallied behind Allen, winning two straight on the road.

Following an impressive debut in Arizona, where Allen tossed four touchdown passes, the team traveled to Houston hoping to carry over some of the same momentum. It wasn’t the lights out performance of a week prior, but Allen did enough to keep the Panthers in contention and ultimately made enough plays for a victory.

Despite three fumbles, the Carolina defense held up and sealed the win with a late forced fumble and recovery of their own. Overcoming what could have been a disastrous performance, the Panthers have plenty of reason to be hopeful about the immediate future without Newton.

Similar to last week, coach Ron Rivera made the call early that Allen would be the starting quarterback for the time being. Now preparing to face a Jacksonville Jaguars team that has also won two straight and features a tenacious front line on defense, the Panthers need to protect Allen in order to be successful.

Flushed from the pocket on multiple occasions and miraculously avoiding a J.J. Watt sack late, Allen wasn’t quite as sharp this past week. Some missed opportunities led to tight end Greg Olsen displaying a bit of frustration after being open on a route but with Allen forced to exit the pocket he couldn’t find him.

Allen was officially sacked three times after being brought down twice the week before. If given the time to operate, then Carolina should be able to take advantage of  their receiving weapons on the outside but he must remain upright against Jacksonville in order to find success.
