Carolina Panthers Week 8 preview at San Francisco 49ers
Carolina Panthers Week 8 preview at the San Francisco 49ers.
Riding a four game winning streak, the Carolina Panthers hope to avoid any loss of momentum caused by the bye week when they travel across the country to face the San Francisco 49ers. Returning from London with a victory against divisional rival Tampa Bay prior to the off week, the Panthers now face a trip in the opposite direction against an undefeated opponent.
San Francisco played Washington last week in a steady rain that limited their offense but needed just three field goals to remain unbeaten, shutting out their opponent in the process. Weather conditions are expected to be much drier but wind could play a factor when they host Carolina this weekend.
Panthers quarterback Cam Newton remains sidelined with a foot injury as the team continues to roll with backup Kyle Allen. Without a starting loss in his career (5-0), Sunday is expected to be his toughest test to date.

Regardless of who is under center for either team on Sunday, they better be well protected. For Carolina, Allen can expect to receive plenty of pressure from a 49ers defense that has tallied 20 sacks in six games this season.
Opposite, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo has struggled under pressure and he too should prepare for a heavy dose of pass rushers as the Panthers revamped defense leads all teams with 27 sacks at this point.
During the winning streak, Allen has shown similar tendencies, often bailed out by defensive play to which Garoppolo can relate. This week, whichever quarterback can find success against a tough opponent, without making a mistake and turning the ball over, should also walk away victorious.
A Panthers win will fuel the Allen over Newton storyline further but a loss, depending on performance, could extinguish any ideas of the former MVP hanging it up in Carolina.
