The Carolina Panthers added another player to their roster on Tuesday.

The Carolina Panthers have added another member to their team. Defensive tackle Stacy McGee is signing with the team according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter,

McGee has played for both the Oakland Raiders and Washington Redskins. He was drafted by Oakland in the sixth round of the 2013 NFL Draft. After playing for the Raiders for three seasons, he signed a five-year contract with the Washington Redskins. However, he has been bitten by the injury bug as of late.

He was placed on the physically unable to perform list to begin the 2018 season. This was due to recovery from a core muscle surgery. He was released by Washington in March. Now, he looks to start his career anew with the Panthers.

This makes perfect sense. With defensive tackle Dontari Poe having surgery on Tuesday, this is Poe’s replacement. In a career that has spanned seven seasons, McGee has 116 tackles, four sacks and two fumble recoveries. Those are not necessarily overwhelming statistics. However, he will at least provide depth at the position and may have a chance to start. For the Carolina Panthers, they need to have as many healthy bodies as they can.

Even still, this is purely a depth signing. Time will tell if McGee will remain with the team beyond this season, but at least provides the Panthers with a capable body at the position. McGee is a veteran player who has experience in the National Football League. That is certainly better than finding an unproven player off the waiver wire. I feel like he will be able to contribute to the Panthers, but he will not record big numbers. At this stage of the season, that is all the Carolina Panthers need.

In the meantime, I hope Poe gets better. The Panthers certainly have a decision to make with him in the offseason but right now, we should all hope he gets healthy and that his recovery goes smoothly.
