Carolina Panthers Ron Rivera sticking with Kyle Allen
Kyle Allen to continue as Carolina Panthers starting quarterback.
The Carolina Panthers drafted quarterback Will Grier in the third-round (No. 100 overall) this past spring. Looking for a developmental talent to learn behind Cam Newton the Panthers elected to make the position a priority during the draft but appear hesitant to let Grier receive any regular season opportunities.
Vaulted into an immediate backup role when Newton was placed on injured reserve after just two starts, Grier has been behind second-year quarterback Kyle Allen for the entire season. Allen started hot in relief of Newton, leading Carolina to four straight victories before a second-half collapse reminiscent of last season. Losing four consecutive games after being 5-3 at the midpoint, the Panthers are already out of playoff contention and should be interested in evaluating some players who typically don’t receive opportunities.
Quarterback Will Grier comes to mind immediately. While he struggled during preseason play, Grier has nearly a full year of practice under his belt and with nothing to lose, should be given some snaps to display his capabilities. Allen received his chance last year but only after injuries forced Ron Rivera’s hand.

Facing an uncertain future, Rivera seems content to continue with the status quo for the time being. Even after 16 turnovers and ranking third in dropped interceptions, including a disastrous final snap in the Washington game this past Sunday, the Panthers coach is reluctant to sit Allen.
When pressed about an opportunity for Grier at some point during his Monday press conference, Rivera responded, “who knows”. Opting to see what talent is available farther down the roster when game outcomes won’t impact seeding or playoff chances would be a wise move in order to help prepare the future of this franchise.
However, if Rivera already feels his time is over then planning beyond the next opponent is likely not going to happen.
