Carolina Panthers: Greg Olsen spot-on when talking to media
The Carolina Panthers tight end made some valid points following Sunday’s loss.
It’s not too often that you hear Carolina Panthers tight end Greg Olsen make bold statements to the media. However, after Sunday’s 38-6 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, this one was definitely needed. The normally quiet and reserved veteran did not hold back when speaking to reporters.
This game was extremely frustrating to watch. As the season begins to wind to a close, the Panthers have continued their downward tailspin. There wasn’t much to be excited about during Sunday’s game. For his part, Olsen caught two passes for 33 yards. Averaging 16.5 yards per reception, a 28-yard reception was his longest of the afternoon. This was undoubtedly a rough day for the offense, and it showed.

In what has been a tough year for the offense, Olsen has had a decent year. He has caught 50 passes for 585 yards and two touchdowns. Averaging 11.7 yards per reception, that number is his highest since 2016, when he recorded 13.4 yards per catch. However, it seems that the days of 2016, ones of winning and success, are in the rearview mirror at least for now.
I hate to put it like this, but it seems like both the organization and the fans just want the season to end. In what is going to be a rebuild heading into the 2020 off-season, the Carolina Panthers have a lot of needs to address. At the present moment, it is tough to see them perform like this. They looked defeated, they are playing like they are defeated, and every Sunday seems like a chore right now. Thankfully, there is only one week left. As Olsen notes, the direction in which this organization is heading is unclear.
"“Right now, I’m not sure what our plan is, you know? … We want to win now, but we want to build for the future. It’s a really tough way to operate. Players are under-performing. … It’s a very collective failure organizationally … Our fans deserve better. A lot of guys in this locker room deserve better. Coaches that have been around here deserve better.”"
He is spot on when speaking to the media. This organization, the fans, and the coaches all deserve better. I am not doubting him or criticizing him for saying that at all. However, it doesn’t change the fact that the Panthers are definitely at a crossroads right now. In what has been a rough couple of years for the organization, things need to get better, and quickly.
